This incentive payment is equal to one percent of the total estimated Medicare Part B Physician Fee Schedule (PFS) allowed charges.

In 2009, the first year the e-prescribing program disbursed incentive payments, CMS paid out $148 million to about 8 percent of the about 600,000 Medicare providers who were eligible.

To be a successful eRx prescriber and be eligible to receive an incentive payment, you must report a minimum of 25 unique visits per year where at least one prescription was electronically prescribed.

Electronically generated refills do not count and faxes do not qualify as eRx. Also new prescriptions not associated with patient visit are not accepted and do not count.
