Perioperative Care

This measures group is to be reported each time a surgical procedure with the indications for a prophylactic antibiotic (including first or second generation cephalosporin) and VTE prophylaxis is performed for patients
aged 18 years and older.

PQRS Group Measures:

#20. Timing of antibiotic prophylaxis - ordering physician

#21. Selection of prophylactic antibiotic - first OR second generation cephalosporin

#22. Discontinuation of prophylactic antibiotics (non-cardiac procedures)

#23. Venous thromboembolism (VTE) prophylaxis (when indicated in ALL patients)

Perioperative Care Example:

Patient has surgery for resection of small intestine (Enterectomy): documentation of order for prophylactic antibiotic to be given within one hour prior to surgical incision; the order for the prophylactic antibiotic was for cefazolin; prophylactic antibiotics were given one hour prior to surgical incision and there is an order to discontinue within 24 hours of surgery end time; documentation there was an order to give VTE prophylaxis within 24 hours of surgery end time.
